What is Asbestos and How Serious Is Removal?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral used in over 3,000 building products. It was primarily used for insulation for many years, until research demonstrated that exposure to the mineral can be lethal. When asbestos is rendered friable (crumbled by hand pressure), the microscopic fibers can cause serious health effects, especially in children and the elderly. When inhaled, asbestos can cause serious respiratory issues such as, mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.
Inhaling these microscopic fibers happens easily when the asbestos has not been properly contained within the home or if the home has been damaged. Exposure to asbestos is more likely in older homes that have not been tested and remediated. The health outcomes from exposure to asbestos are irreversible and are fatal at times. The permanent effects of asbestos related diseases have harmed thousands of communities across Colorado and the United States.
Where Does Asbestos Hide?
Asbestos is commonly found in exterior cement board siding, roofing shingles, window glazing, wall and ceiling plaster, drywall texture, joint compound, sheet vinyl (linoleum), floor tiles, as well as attic and pipe insulation, and many more.
Prior to any remodels, demolition, or any remediation after fires and water damage, Colorado State law requires that an asbestos building inspector certified by Colorado State, regardless of the age of the home, must conduct an accredited asbestos inspection.
